8 things I love to spend my spoons on

Although there’s usually a big spoon shortage, I do have some things I don’t mind spending my spoons on at all. Here’s my top 10 in no particular order.

I used to be the lunch lady for 30 people in an office. It was awesome planning their lunches and cooking for all of them! Even before that I’d worked in restaurants and cafes in varies jobs for years. Now I cook for my son and me when I have the spoons. I still love to plan our weekly meals and find new recipes to tweak.

This has been a favourite of mine since I was a kid. Just walking in the woods, finding new paths, taking in all the sounds, sights and smells from nature. I used to always have a dog, but as you might know I had to rehome my last dog this May. I’m just too ill to give a dog what it needs now. Fortunately, I’ve found I still take pleasure in walking by myself.

Family and friends

My friends and family are very important to me, and being able to visit or have a visit regularly keeps me (somewhat) sane. Most of my friends are fellow spoonies. I guess that’s just the way it goes after years and years of illness. They know what it’s like. My family are supportive, and from time to time it feels like I’m ‘normal’ when we hang out.

This probably comes as no surprise to anyone who’s following me. I loooove animals. Always have, always will. As I said, I can’t have a dog the way things are, but I do have my cats. I also foster cats for the local branch of a national rescue organisation. At the moment I have 11 kittens and 6 adult fosters! There’s no moping about with all those kittens in the house, I can tell you!

I’m very, very lucky to be able to read as much as I do. The fog has not taken that away at least. I do make it easier on myself by sticking to British crime series, though. That means I don’t have to adjust to different countries, languages, political differences and such. I can just devour the series because I know the background stuff. It takes too many spoons to get my head around other books at the moment.

Lifting weights

This was me 4 years ago.

Every since I started my education to become a personal trainer I’ve just loved lifting weights. I love getting stronger and being able to trust my body. Although I’ve not been able to do this for a while my goal is always, always to get back to lifting. It’s probably the physicality of it. It makes me think of my body as an instrument in a way. It helps me forget about my looks and focus on what I can do. I’ll try to explain the impact lifting weights has on my mental health in a later post when I’m back in the gym.

I got my first diary when I was about 10 years old, and since then I’ve put my words on paper. These days I write blog posts, but I also like writing fiction and poems. It’s just hard with the brain fog. It stops the flow. Writing is still in the back of my mind, though. I’ll get back to it when I can.

Eating out

As much as I love cooking, I love eating out even more. Food that has been prepared by someone else is always awesome! There’s also the added bonus of spending time with friends and family.
